I have collected in one place all the information about businesses, resorts and things to do on Quadra Island. Quadra Island lies between Vancouver Island and the Canadian Mainland near Campbell River in British Columbia, Canada. You can find it on a map between 125'8 " to 125'24" west and 49'59" and 50'20" north.

I have also provided a complete telephone directory of everyone on the island sorted both alphabetically and numerically. I have ordered this with information for tourists near the top and Quadra Island residents near the bottom. If you click on anything underlined, you will see more detail.

Quadra has a population of about 4000 people. In summer the population doubles with tourists coming for the salmon fishing -- the best sport fishery in the world. Quadra is mostly forested. Crime is low and vandalism almost unknown. People greet you as they pass. Even the teenagers are polite. It is a very neighbourly place where even strangers help each other out. In winter it is cold and wet, but in summer it is paradise. Quadra is very laid back. Typical garb here for males would be heavy boots, blue jeans, a flannel shirt, and an optional baseball cap. Women dress casually with individual flair.

Ferry Schedules

Roughly speaking, the ferries leave from Campbell River for Quadra on the half hour and return on the hour. The trip is only 10 minutes.

Maps

There are two main roads on the Island. The locals call these the front road and the back road. They run in parallel north/south on the most-populated southern part of the island. The official name of the front road is West Road. The official name of the back road is Heriot Bay Road (north of Quathiaski Cove) and Cape Mudge Road south of it. These form the twin backbones of the island. You can get from one to the other only at Quathiaski Cove and Heriot Bay. To get to the north island and the lakes you must first go to Heriot Bay and take Cramer Road to the west becoming Hyacinthe Bay Road. You can get free road maps at the Quadra Market in Quathiaski Cove or from the local realtors.

Cortés is accessible by ferry from Quadra. From the Cortes ferry landing follow the signs to Smelt Bay and Hollyhock. The road is winding and you must make several turns - do not go to Squirrel Cove. The road to Hollyhock is on the left (Highfield Rd.), about 18 kilometers (11 miles), from the ferry and it is well marked. • Rebecca Spit Provincial Park The spit is a long narrow strip of land jutting out into the ocean, still forested, flanked on both sides by beaches. There are sturdy clean picnic tables, a playing field, and parking areas. This is the most common spot for islanders to hold outdoor events such as the May Day celebrations. On 1946 June 26 there was an earthquake that formed a miniature rift valley at the tip of the spit. About 1/2 acre just fell into the sea. For decades the tips of the trees poked through the ocean waves. In June look for huckleberries. In July the ghostly white translucent Indian Pipes grow near the tip.
