womb: Sometimes called an application server or a container. A program that runs on a server that supports small Java servlet programs that process transactions. Also the part of a web browser that supports Applets. It may be the container that runs EJBs. It may be the hosting for PHP programs. It would also include HTML enhancers like Freemarker and JSP. Something that just hosted HTML or FTP would be called a server, but not an application server.
