valid: A component is valid if its size and position relative to its enclosing container have been calculated. A container is valid if it is valid with respect to its container, and all its enclosed children are valid. A container might be marked invalid because a subcomponent had been added/removed or shown/hidden and the positions of the remaining elements need to be adjusted in position and size. An individual component might be marked invalid because it now contains an image that takes more room to display. Valid does imply the component is currently or even will be displayed on the screen. Standard layout managers ignore hidden components. Custom ones could well leave room for them.
