You are here : home : Java Glossary : S words : semantic web.

semantic web
There are two tools to help you find what you are looking for on the Internet: links and search engines. As the Internet haystack gets bigger by the second, it gets harder and harder to find what you are looking for. If you google on whirlpool you will get information on both appliances and natural whirlpools. The search engines don't understand the content of pages. They just collect words.

The Semantic Web is a vision of the Internet to correct that.

What we need are tools that understand context. We need structured data that are more friendly to computer analysis. This requires the world to agree on common formats of storing information that are more amenable to automated analysis. It is distressing how feeble the attempts at standardisation are. Human ego, not technology, is the problem. It may be long slow struggle to make knowledge accessible.
