You are here : home : Java Glossary : P words : PATH.

PATH
An environment variable that lists the directories the command processor searches for *.exe, *.com and .bat files, including of course javac.exe and java.exe. Avoid duplicate filenames, even with different extensions. You may be astonished which one executes. We need a utility to detect this problem. You can discover what the PATH is with the system property:

System.getProperty( "java.library.path" );

which you can view by running wassup as an application. The PATH separator character is platform dependent. You can discover it with:

System.getProperty( "path.separator" );

It will usually be ; or :. In some operating systems you must put ., the current directory, explicitly on the PATH.

The path is stored in different ways on different platforms and you use different tools to set it.
