parent: parent is not the same thing as a superclass. Roughly speaking parent is the immediately enclosing graphical element. If a button is in a panel and the panel is in an Applet we say the panel is the parent of the button and the Applet is the parent of the panel. A parent can have many children, but a child can have only one parent. This defines a hierarchy of objects that describe a screen layout.
