An Object Request Broker that more or less conforms to CORBA. That rules out Microsoft's OLE, and to a lesser extent Java's RMI and IBM's SOM. An ORB is not proprietary. CORBA is freely available with no fee, and is entirely vendor-neutral.

There are now at least a couple of dozen proprietary and 40 or so free or open source ORBs available, not far off 100 in total, and more all the time (though lots of old ones like ORB-Plus, NEO, Joe, HardPack, ObjectBroker, etc. have also disappeared). IBM's SOM was retired a few years back. IBM's new ORB is ComponentBroker.
