new rule
In the movie Can Heironymus Merkin Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness, Heironymus Merkin, played by Anthony Newley, is on a TV game show. Every time he thinks he has won, the game show host announces New Rule! and introduces yet another rule that means he has not. Some computer programmers use this movie as a model for designing their programs and user interfaces. One notable example would be Microsoft and the registry. Every time you think you understand it, you discover there is yet another complication.

If programs require new rule after new rule to handle special cases, it usually means there is something funamentally wrong with the basic approach. In good code, special cases tend to come out in the wash.
