Liberty
Liberty is the good guys' (Sun, American Express, AOL Products, Bell Canada, CitiGroup, France Telecom, General Motors, Global Crossing, Hewlett-Packard, MasterCard, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, OpenWave, Sony, RSA Security, United Airlines, Vodafone) response to the evil Microsoft's Passport.

It has three goals:

  1. To enable consumers and businesses to maintain personal information securely.
  2. To provide a universal, open standard for single sign-on with decentralized authentication and open authorization from multiple providers.
  3. To provide an open standard for network identity spanning all network-connected devices.
What does that mean in English? It means you should be able to browse the web, divulging information about your name, address, credit cards etc, only to those you want to divulge it to, at the touch of button. No central authority should have a master list of everyone's data.

It means you others should not be able to browse the net, pretending to be you, buying stuff in your name, or signing you up for things you don't want.

It means that you should not need different software to interact with every website. They all should work the same when it comes to proving you are who you claim to be, and in them proving who they claim to be, and in sharing precisely which information you feel like sharing.

Users can sign on to one online service -- be it banking, retail, research, literally anything -- and then have the freedom to go to any other service that's Liberty-enabled without signing on again. Forget about learning and remembering all those usernames and passwords.
