JSTL
JSP Standard Tag Library is both a Sun standard and an opensource Apache/Jakarta project. It runs in a JSP servlet womb such as Tomcat. It is a library of JSP tag functions. So instead of writing Java in your JSP like this: 

<% if ((User)session.getAttribute("user")).getName().equals("Joe") { %>

you can write: 

<c:if test="${user.name == 'Joe'}">
