JEditorPane
JEditorPane is a component in Swing that can be used to render HTML or RTF (Rich Text Format). Using it is simpler than the documentation suggests. You don't need to get involved with Document structure. You can simply feed it raw HTML text. If you don't embed the JEditorPane in a ScrollPane, the screen will twitch, a bug in Swing.

output = new JEditorPane();
output.setContentType( "text/html" );
output.setEditable(false );
output.setBackground(lemonChiffon );
input.setFont(new Font( "Serif" , Font.PLAIN , 12));
input.setForeground(black );
gbc = new GridBagConstraints();
gbc.gridx = 0;
gbc.gridy = 4;
// ...
outputScroll = new JScrollPane(output);
gridBagLayout.setConstraints(outputScroll , gbc);
pane.add(outputScroll);
// ...
output.setText( "<html><body><font color=\"red\">hello</font></body></html>" );
