The capital city of Indonesia. It was Microsoft's codename for J++ before it was released. The most common meaning now is for a group of open source projects part of Apache. Apache is a group of people, not a company, who make an opensource webserver. They refer to the open source project as Jakarta, and the servlet womb part of it as Tomcat. There are now all kinds of open source Java projects under the Jakarta banner, such as:

Alexandria: documentation with XML.
Ant : make
Avalon : Java library.
BCEL : Byte Code Engineering Library, lets you read and write class files.
Cactus : tool for unit testing server side Java code.
Commons : reusable Java components. This includes: ArrayUtils, BagUtils, BeanUtils, CollectionUtils, ComparatorUtils, DateUtils, DbUtils, FileUtils, IOUtils, IteratorUtils, ListUtils, MathUtils, NumberUtils and ObjectUtils
ECS : Element Construction Set, lets you generate HTML or XML from Java objects.
James : mail server.
Jetspeed : some incomprehensible b.s. about portals.
JMeter : performance measurement.
Log4J : a scheme for dynamically inserting and removing logging code from your code.
Lucene : search engine
ORO : regexes
POI : read and write Microsoft proprietary format files.
Regexp : regexes
Slide : incoherent babbling about content management.
Struts : Model View Controller manager.
Taglibs : JSP library of taglibs.
Tomcat : servlet womb
Turbine : for building secure server applications.
Velocity : competitor/extension to JSP.
Watchdog : validation tests for the Servlet and JSP specification.
