Starting with JDK 1.3 there is support for an expanded set of Jar-file manifest attributes that enable Applets to specify version and vendor information for the extensions that they require. The manifests of Jar-packaged Applets can specify a URL at which the latest version of the extension the Java Plug-in can download if:

the needed extension is not already installed in the Java runtime environment
the extension is installed but has an out-of-date version number
the extension is installed but is not from a specified vendor.
