Introduction

With the advent of css, it is trivially easy to change the entire colour scheme of a website. It makes it even more embarrassing if your website's colours don't co-ordinate well. Creating a pleasing colour scheme requires an artistic skill I don't have, though I think I know a good one when I see one.

I thought I would start collecting colour schemes for the web authoring community. If you have some colour schemes that you are willing to share, please email them to me. All you need do is list the hex colour numbers you think go well together, ordering dark to light. Give your colour scheme a name. If you want to save me some work, put them in the same HTML table form as those below.

The Schemes

Feel free to use any of these colour schemes in your web pages without credit.

How To Collect Colour Schemes

You can collect colour schemes by buying a copy of Paint Shop Pro 7. Then you can take a screen snapshot of any application or browser display, and then use the eyedropper tool to sample the colour. If you open the colour wheel, you will see the corresponding HTML hex number displayed where you can cut and paste it.

You can sample photos of fabrics, house interiors, nature, etc. to collect a pleasing scheme. You can capture images with a digital camera or with a scanner. As far as I know, doing this does not violate any copyrights. Using other people's names for your colour schemes might get you in trouble though.

Another techinque is to use the Web based colour scheme creator called The Colour Schemer. It only works with Internet Explorer. You select a base colour, and it suggests other colours that will go along well with it. It does well with earth tones, not so well with accent colours.
