college
An advanced school. In the USA, the term is synonymous with university. In Canada it implies a trade school or private business school, with considerably less prestige than a university. In the USA, each year of college has a label: freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. In Canada they are called first year, second year... In Canada, first year students are disparagingly referred to as frosh. In England, a college is an independent corporation within a university, typically teaching the introductory years. e.g. King's College at the University of Cambridge. A college can also be an upper crust private school for male children such as Eton college.
