Collections of Source code

The best way to learn Java is to study working examples of source code. You get get that from on-line collections and from books with usually come with a CD of source code.

• You can find heavily commented source I wrote via the entries for BigDate, LinkedList, RadixSort, QuickSort, HeapSort and BeanInfo. You can also download source to all the CMP classes, utilities and amanuenses written in Java. I wrote this code with the idea in mind that newbies were watching over my shoulder wondering what I was up to.

• 	Core Web Programming, Second Edition

  	Marty Hall and Gary Cornell
  1250 pages. This is a great doorstop of a book. It has a few chapters on client-server programming in Java, and a section of that is on CGI. I have looked at hundreds of Java books and found nothing that deals in depth with client side Java talking to CGI, except Marty's book. It is really very simple and he does an excellent job of explaining it. Marty has posted all the source code examples from the book for anyone to use. These contain updates and errata fixes you don't get on the CD-ROM that comes with the book.

• Jakarta Source Code Collections part of the Apache project. includes source for Ant, ECS, Log4J, ORO, James, Regexp, Slide, Struts, Taglibs, Tomcat, Velocity, Watchdog.
• KickJava has JavaDoc for all the standard methods organised alphabetically with sample code on how to use some of them.
• When looking for Java source code with Google, try adding the phrase "public class" in quotes to the search criteria.
