chained exceptions
If you catch an exception, then decide to rethrow a new one to be caught at a higher level, the information in the lower level exeception is lost unless you print it out right there. Instead, starting with Java 1.4 you can pass the old exception as a parameter to the constructor of the new exception, thus combining the information from both the old and new exeception.
