cab files: Microsoft's proprietary cabinet archive files. They have the same function as zip and Java's JAR files. Microsoft also uses them to distribute software on CD ROM. They have better compression than zip files since they are not designed to be updated. See this Microsoft tech note on how to extract data from a cab file. This can be useful to repair a lost system file from the original install CD.
